Review Your Raw Material Supply Chain
Many manufacturers have been buying the same materials from the same suppliers for years.
Sometimes that is absolutely the right decision. Sometimes it simply reflects history.
Alternative suppliers may offer comparable materials with different pricing, improved availability or shorter lead times.
The challenge is not finding alternatives. The challenge is understanding which alternatives are genuinely equivalent and which may introduce unnecessary technical risk.
Look Beyond the Formula
Not every cost-saving opportunity sits inside the formulation.
Manufacturing processes, batch sizes, production efficiency, rework, yield losses and inventory management can all influence total manufacturing cost.
I have seen businesses spend months reducing formulation costs while overlooking operational improvements that delivered even greater savings.
Sometimes the best solution is not changing the chemistry at all.
Test Before You Change
Every cost-reduction project should include appropriate laboratory evaluation and application testing.
What works in the laboratory does not always perform the same way in production or in the customer’s hands.
A relatively small investment in proper validation can prevent much larger costs later through warranty claims, customer dissatisfaction or product recalls.
